Simon Daykin is currently celebrating his birthday in California with his wife, Ciara, and son, Declan. The Daykin family is currently enjoying the sunshine and working on hot new events for Daykin Productions in the US. The rest of the team from YYC wishes Simon a very happy birthday filled with sunshine, California cocktails and hopefully a handsomely priced birthday present from Rodeo Drive!
If you haven’t met Simon, check out his bio below: Simon is an accomplished designer. He began his career in Ontario at Sheridan College prior to moving to Calgary to work as an Architectural Designer. Simon is also an accredited interior decorator. Simon’s involvement in events began early in his career when he was the co-owner of a successful DJ company in Toronto. Having been the DJ at over 200+ events, Simon knows that music impacts the entire atmosphere of an event. Simon also worked directly with artists during his career in the Canadian music industry with an independent artist recording distributor. He was the guest judge at many battle of the band events and has a diverse taste in music.
During his studies in interior decorating Simon took a particular interest in Feng Shui and transfers this knowledge to the events he designs at Firefly. Simon is skilled in creating moody lighting to enhance the ambience and is experimenting with fragrance to heighten the senses of the guests as they walk into his creations.
Simon now lives in Calgary with his wife, Ciara Daykin, The Event Choreographer for Firefly Occasions. Together, Ciara and Simon infuse events with unique detailing. The two travel extensively, researching event production in different countries and cultures.
Most recently, Simon and Ciara have been traveling California with their new son Declan!
My name’s Kendra Scott, I’m the Wedding’s Division Manager at Firefly Occasions and as of December 19th, I now have my own wedding to plan! Every Friday I write a feature article where I document my personal wedding planning journey each step of the way.
Cupcakes, Candy Bar, Wedding Cake, Sundae Bar, there are sooooo many options! Probably my current favourite is the Sundae Bar we posted earlier this week on the blog:). However, I can’t have it all and my unhealthy obsession with Crave Cupcakes has taken over. The majority of my guests are travelling from Ontario and though they have their own cupcake shoppes there, I know many are looking forward to tasting these little mouth-fulls of joy that I won’t stop talking about
. We’ve decided to go with a sweet table of mini cupcakes, macaroons and a 6” cake. This week I came across so many cute options for cake toppers and I’m really excited for the topper we’ve selected. I didn’t want a traditional Husband and Wife cake topper and I wasn’t sure what I did want. Luckily, Etsy.com never fails and I found an abundance of great ideas! I really liked the “Love” topper and custom colours were an option which is wonderful. However, I really fell in love with this sugar rose. I can’t believe the talent some people have. Can you believe this is made from sugar!? I’m curious to see how it’s shipped? Hopefully it’s not in little pieces when it arrives. They do say though that they won’t ship to Canada….minor detail haha that’s not stopping me.
Now that we’re within our six month mark to the wedding we can finally arrange a meeting for our cupcakes and cake… one of the only aspects my fiance has any interest in.
Let’s be serious. Nobody hearts Mondays. So every Monday we are here to lighten the mood and talk about things we do heart: Ice-cream sundae buffets.
She hearts the idea of anything unique and far from cookie cutter!
He hearts the thrill of being able to customize an ice cream Sundae.
Having an ice cream buffet for a wedding on a hot summer day is a unique and fabulous idea. Guests can choose their own flavor and sugary, colorful toppings. If you have an outdoor reception, this will be a great way to cool off your guests, entertain children and keep people talking about your exceptional, vibrant and entertaining ice cream buffet.
Having a buffet is also a great opportunity for you to incorporate your wedding colors, theme and decor.
She suggests: Light pastel colors such as salmon pink or mint green and cream.
He suggests: Having someone serve the ice cream to avoid a mess and ensure the buffet line moves along quickly. This is especially important if you have a large attendance at your reception. Bon Appetite!
Crave Cupcakes is well known to all Calgarians for being a delish cupcakery and the place to order wedding cupcakes. I checked out Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 under 40 and co-owners Carolyne McIntyre Jackson & Jodi Willoughby made the list. They’re not just on the list for their oh so sweet cupcake treats but also their saavy business skills which has led them to open 3 locations around Calgary with plans to expand into other provinces. Congratulations Carolyne and Jodi for making the Top 40 under 40 List!
I just got back from a fun trip to Santa Monica. While I was there I of course stopped by a shop that had to do with weddings. I found this fun bakery called Vanilla Bake Shop on Wilshire Blvd. near our hotel and they had a beautiful display of wedding cakes in the window.
They also made the most adorable bite sized cupcakes so I just had to try one out! I got a chocolate raspberry one and it was delicious.
How does German chocolate cake with coconut- pecan icing and milk- chocolate drizzle sound or yellow cake with buttercream frosting and orange-colored vanilla coating? Or better yet Devil’s food cake with fudge icing and dark- chocolate coating? Is your mouth watering yet?

Now what about serving all of the above plus a variety of others to your guests? Wondering how? Check out these cake balls. Available at Neiman Marcus and your local bakery these cake balls offer your guests the choice of many delectable flavors in bite sized portions.
